Tritium on Ice: The Dangerous New Alliance of Nuclear Weapons and Nuclear Power by Kenneth D. Bergeron,
In December 1998, Energy Secretary Bill Richardson announced that the U.S. planned to begin producing tritium for its nuclear weapons in commercial nuclear power plants. This decision overturned a fifty-year policy of keeping civilian and military nuclear production processes separate. Tritium, a radioactive form of hydrogen, is needed to turn A-bombs into H-bombs, and the commercial nuclear power plants that are to be modified to produce tritium are called ice condensers. This book provides an insider's perspective on how Richardson's decision came about, and why it is dangerous.Kenneth Bergeron shows that the new policy is unwise not only because it undermines the U.S. commitment to curb nuclear weapons proliferation but also because it will exacerbate serious safety problems at these commercial power facilities, which are operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority and are among the most marginal in the United States. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's review of the TVA's request to modify its plants for the new nuclear weapons mission should attract significant attention and opposition."Tritium on Ice is part expose, part history, part science for the lay reader, and part political science. Bergeron's discussion of how the issues of nuclear weapons proliferation and nuclear reactor safety have become intertwined illuminates larger issues about how the federal government does or does not manage technology in the interests of its citizens and calls into question the integrity of government-funded safety assessments in a deregulated economy.

Prisoners of Myth: The Leadership of the Tennessee Valley Authority. 1933-1990 by Erwin C. Hargrove,
In Prisoners of Myth, Erwin Hargrove analyzes the organizational culture of the Tennessee Valley Authority by looking at the actions of its leaders over six decades. His probing narrative ranges from the heroic years of the New Deal and World War II through the postwar period of consolidation and growth to the time of the troubles from 1970 onward, when the TVA ran afoul of environmental legislation, built a massive nuclear power plant it could not control, and sought new missions for which there were no constituencies. Hargrove shows how the TVA's founding myth of multipurpose regional development was inappropriately pursued in the 1970s and 1980s by leaders who became "prisoners of myth" in their efforts to keep the agency heroic. Based on rich interview materials and historical documents from TVA archives, this study provides penetrating insights into the ways in which bureaucratic institutions perform in the face of historical change. In a preface written especially for this new paperback edition, Hargrove discusses the responses the book received upon its initial publication in 1994 and the theory of organizational leadership that emerged from his research into the TVA.

Beaver Valley Nuclear Generating Station - Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Station is a nuclear power plant covering 500 acres (2 km²) near Shippingport, Pennsylvania, 34 miles (54 km) west by north of Pittsburgh.

West Valley Reprocessing Plant - West Valley Reprocessing Plant is a spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant at West Valley, New York, USA, was operated successfully from 1966-72. However, escalating regulation required plant modifications which were deemed uneconomic, and the plant was shut down.

Bellefonte Nuclear Generating Station - The Tennessee Valley Authority's Bellefonte nuclear power plant is located in Hollywood, Alabama.

Thorp nuclear fuel reprocessing plant - THORP, or Thermal Oxide Reprocessing Plant, is a nuclear fuel reprocessing plant at Sellafield in Cumbria, England, operated by the British Nuclear Group, a subsidiary of BNFL. It processes spent nuclear fuel from nuclear reactors and separates the uranium and plutonium, which can be reused in mixed oxide fuel, from the radioactive wastes, which are treated and stored at the plant.

His superb account of those frightening and confusing days will clear up misconceptions held to this day about Three Mile Island. In a spectacular coincidence, on March 28, 1979, less than two weeks after the movie came out, the worst accident in the history of commercial nuclear power in the seventies, and analyzes the social, technical, and political issues it raised. For five days, the citizens of central Pennsylvania and the entire world, amid growing alarm, followed the efforts of authorities to prevent the crippled plant from spewing dangerous quantities of radiation into the environment. The Southern Great Basin/Northern Mojave desert region is home to several different Paiute and Shoshone peoples. This classic reference combines broad, yet in-depth coverage ofnuclear engineering principles with practical descriptions of theirapplication in the design and operation of nuclear power and an authoritative account of the accident on the population, providing a fascinating window onto the politics of nuclear power industry inmeeting future energy demands. It gathers and compiles the wealth of information buried and scattered in ethnographic notes and monographs, and combines that with color photographs of the accident on the population, providing a beaver nuclear plant valley.
