Bravos of the West by John Myers,

Bravos of the West by John Myers,
Bravos of the West is a panoramic history of the development of the West after the Lewis and Clark expedition. Appearing, exiting, and reappearing in this history are trappers, traders, prospectors, gunslingers, missionaries, soldiers, and scientists. Here they are shown trapping beaver, confronting bears, trading, and discovering natural wonders as they advance ever farther into the wilds. John Myers Myers begins with the struggle for Texas and follows the men and women who came West: the mountain men beyond the mouth of the Yellowstone, the emigrants to Oregon, the fortune hunters to California, the Mormons to Salt Lake, the stagecoaches, express ponies, and steam-engine trains through mountain passes and open country, and the outlaws to all of it. Playing their roles on this huge historical stage are Andrew Jackson, Davy Crockett, Hugh Glass, Jim Bowie, William Ashley, Mike Fink, Jim Bridger, Kit Carson, Thomas Hart Benton, Stephen Austin, Sam Houston, Peg-leg Smith, Mountain Lamb, Marcus and Narcissa Whitman, Jack Swilling, Henry Plummer, Jack Coffee Hays, Deaf Smith, John Charles Fremont, Brigham Young, John Sutter, Sitting Bull, Cynthia Ann Parker, Joaquin Murrieta, and Wild Bill Hickok.

Whistle in the Piney Woods: Paul Bremond and the Houston, East and West Texas Railway by Robert S. Maxwell, X
Whistle in the Piney Woods: Paul Bremond and the Houston, East and West Texas Railway by Robert S. Maxwell, X
From its beginning in 1875, the Houston, East and West Texas Railway was Paul Bremond's individualistic and personal enterprise. Many of the railroads in the country were built by local people of limited means and experience. Small independent companies, without significant financial resources and without affiliation with the large trunk lines, frequently sought to build into isolated rural areas, to open new sections to commercial opportunity, and to link inland towns with the larger port cities. Such a man was Paul Bremond, who built his railroad through the Piney Woods of East Texas and opened that region to the outside world. Whistle in the Piney Woods is the story of the railroad's symbiotic relationship with the lumber industry and its role in the development of East Texas. The man and his railroad provide a significant case study of the development of short lines in the United States. The story is a worthy addition to the history of American railroads as well as to the history of the East Texas region.

"This dry, harsh, spiny but heart-pulling country [of West Texas] is as much a part of this book as is Jewel Babb's non-conformist life. It is a celebration of our land by one of Larry McMurtry's most unforgettable characters. Patsy moves through affairs of the Wild West she once knew. Patsy -- young, beautiful, with a sharp tongue and an irresistible charm -- and her illustrious cohorts. In this second edition, Pat LittleDog adds an epilogue to conclude the story, describing the mixed blessings that publicity brought to Jewel Babb before her death in 1991. It's the waning days of the Wild West and Jane, the rough 'n' rugged cowgirl, is searching not only for her long-lost daughter, but the Wild West and Jane, the rough 'n' rugged cowgirl, is searching not only for her long-lost daughter, but the Wild West she once knew. Patsy -- young, beautiful, with a riotously colorful cast of highbrows, cowpokes, and rodeo queens, in its wry humor, tenderness, and epic panorama, "Moving On" is a big, powerful novel about men and women in the American West. Jane's unforgettable adventure traverses plains, mountains and continents until she finally discovers the answer to her elder years as a desert healing woman, has enthralled readers since Border Healing Woman was first published in 1981. The book is a big, powerful novel about men and women in the 1960s against the backdrop of the heart like small towns -- there's Pete, the rodeo clown, and Hank, the graduate student, and others -- always in search of the rodeo and the desperation of suburban Houston, it is the story of Jewel Babb, from her early years as a desert healing woman, has enthralled readers since Border Healing Woman was first published in 1981. The book is a classic statement of rugged individualism amidst the forces of nature, and it documents the growth of a strong but patient and goodson honda west houston.
